Rep. Anthony Weiner (@RepWeiner)

Sex, Congress and Twitter — the appearance of those three words in the same story was inevitable, and Rep. Anthony Weiner made it happen. The New York Democrat today admitted, after days of forceful protests to the contrary, that he sent lewd pictures of himself and engaged in sexual banter with multiple women via Twitter.

UPDATE, June 16: Weiner announced his resignation from Congress today. “I had hoped to be able to continue the work that the citizen of my district elected me to do — to fight for the middle class and those struggling to make it,” Weiner said. “Unfortunately, the distraction that I have created has made that impossible.”

UPDATE, Sept. 13: Weiner’s Twitter sex scandal cost Democrats a House seat today, as Republicans scored an upset in the race to replace him. GOP candidate Bob Turner bested Democratic rival David Weprin 54 percent to 46 percent. Democrats had held the House seat since 1923.

UPDATE, Dec. 7: Time magazine recognized Weiner’s “twimmolation” as the top worst tweet of 2011.
