What Yahoo News said: “When you’re in the spotlight as much as Olympic athletes are, it pays to keep your personal opinions — and tasteless sense of humor — to yourself.”
Greek triple-jumper Voula Papachristou violated that common-sense rule when she published this tweet (translated into English from Greek): “With so many Africans in Greece, at least the West Nile mosquitoes will be eating home-made food!” Papachristou deleted the tweet and apologized, but she lost her chance to compete in the Summer Olympics in London, which begin tonight.
A day after her dismissal from the Olympic team, she said she is “very bitter and upset” about “the excessive reaction and speed of the disciplinary decision.” She added, “I will get over this and give my answers in my future performances.”
