Rule No. 1 in public (or private) discourse: Don’t use the n-word to describe blacks — ever. Rule No. 2: Don’t dare think that Twitter humor exempts you from Rule No. 1.

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow did. Or maybe it was her friend Terius Nash, the black singer-songwriter known as The Dream. Whoever typed the tongue-in-cheek tweet “Ni**as in paris for real” from Paltrow’s account while at a concert created a PR headache for her.

Her defense: “Hold up. It’s the title of the song!” “Nigga doesn’t have any power over me,” Nash added. “… Context is everything.” He vowed not to discuss the issue further but then repeatedly tweeted about it for two days.
